Description

A gorgeous antique Regency style mahogany leather top desk / writing table. This was made in England, it dates from around the 1930’s period.

It is of outstanding quality and is a lovely, useful size. The flame mahogany grain patterns on the drawers are stunning and they have fine, hand cut dovetailed joints. There are wonderful beaded borders around the drawer fronts, side and back panels. The back is also nicely polished so this can be used as a free standing item. It stands on a beautiful stretchered base with gorgeous harp shaped legs that stand on brass capped casters. The top has a lovely pierced brass gallery around the back and sides, with cross banded edges and an inset slightly faded green leather writing surface with gold tooling around the edges.

We have had this recently re-polished, the condition is excellent for its age. The leather has acquired a gorgeous colour tone and patina, with just the right amount of wear.

The Regency style, spanning the late 18th to early 19th centuries, draws heavy inspiration from classical Greek, Roman, and Egyptian architecture, characterised by clean lines, classical proportions, and restrained ornamentation.

These tables were typically crafted from dense hardwoods like mahogany or rosewood, frequently accented with brass galleries, gilded mounts, and inset tooled leather surfaces for writing.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-appropriate joinery such as hand-cut dovetails, genuine timber shrinkage, traditional brass hardware, and patination consistent with age rather than artificial distressing.

An antique writing table creates a sophisticated focal point when paired with contemporary seating and minimalist decor, balancing historical character with clean, modern aesthetics.

Maintain the wood with high-quality beeswax to nourish the grain, and clean the leather surface gently with a slightly damp cloth, avoiding harsh chemical cleaners or direct sunlight.
