This small Georgian mahogany Pembroke table displays a warm brown timber colour with rich natural grain patterns across its oval drop-leaf top surface and four square tapered legs. A single frieze drawer is fitted into one end beneath the surface, complemented by visible hinges along the folding leaf joints and a polished wood finish. The piece measures 73 cm high, 79 cm wide, and 45 cm deep, extending to 100 cm wide when opened. Placed at the end of a sofa or against a wall in an English country house setting, the table serves as a functional surface for everyday living. The drop leaves provide flexible dimensions for compact spaces, while the slender profile suits traditional reception rooms or studies.

A Pembroke table is a compact drop-leaf table introduced in the 18th century, designed for light, versatile occasional use such as serving tea, writing, or dining. Characterised by two hinged flaps and a frieze drawer, it was named after the Countess of Pembroke who originally commissioned the form.

authentic Georgian Pembroke tables were typically crafted from solid mahogany or mahogany veneers, often featuring hand-cut dovetail joints on frieze drawers and hand-planed underside surfaces. The drop leaves are supported by wooden fly-brackets or swivelling wooden hinges built directly into the frame.

Look for signs of age including hand-chiseled drawer construction, uneven shrinkage lines along timber grain, historical wear on the rule joints of the hinged leaves, and original square-tapered or turned legs. The presence of wood-hinge supports under the flaps rather than later metal brackets is also a key indicator.

A Pembroke table works exceptionally well as a side table positioned beside a sofa or armchair, allowing the leaves to drop when space is limited. It can also function as a compact hall table, bedside stand, or flexible display surface in modern living rooms.

Keep the wood away from direct heat sources and strong sunlight to prevent timber movement or fading. Maintain the timber surface by applying a high-quality beeswax paste once or twice a year, buffing gently along the grain with a soft cotton cloth.
