This nineteenth-century Italian Grand Tour planter urn follows classical architectural styles in terracotta and glazed earthenware. The piece displays a pink and white colour scheme with a cream glaze finish over the terracotta body. A central male grotesque mask sits in relief on the frieze alongside twin scrolling handles, a floral sash, a lobed upper section, a gadrooned body, and an intricately moulded pedestal. The object measures 71 cm high, 76 cm wide, and 58 cm deep, and includes a signature by Cecconelli on the base alongside a square plinth. Placed on a sideboard top, this garden jardiniere suits a sunlit conservatory or living space interior as a classical decorative container.

A Grand Tour terracotta urn is a decorative ceramic vessel created in the style of classical Greek, Roman, or Renaissance antiquities. Produced predominantly in Italy during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, these pieces were acquired by European travellers as souvenirs showcasing classical art and architecture.

Traditional Italian jardinieres are crafted from local earthenware clay or terracotta. They are frequently finished with lead or tin glazes, such as majolica, and feature hand-moulded or slip-cast relief ornamentation including classical masks, garlands, and gadrooning.

Authentic period pieces exhibit signs of age such as natural crazing within the glaze, minor chipping along exposed relief edges, and authentic terracotta oxidation. Look for makers marks or stamps near the base, as well as hand-finished sculptural details rather than uniform machine production.

Place the urn as a focal piece on a sideboard, hallway console table, or central foyer display. It can be styled empty to highlight its sculptural profile or filled with dried foliage and branches to add botanical texture to a room.

Dust regularly with a dry, soft microfiber cloth. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners or abrasive sponges that could damage the glaze; clean light surface dirt using a slightly damp cloth with mild soap and keep the ceramic indoors to prevent frost damage.
