This pair of early twentieth-century French side tables follows Louis XVI period design in a kidney shape. Made from walnut and kingwood with a mellow, pale colour, the timber displays line inlay and a mellow patina. Each low occasional table has an inset breche d'alep marble top in multicolour tones, surrounded by a pierced cast brass gallery with vertical slats. The supports consist of tapering square section legs with square brass sabot feet at the base, and the entire construction shows no damage or repairs in its excellent original condition. Measuring 50 cm high, 63 cm wide, and 30 cm deep, the pair works well in a modern interior as reception tables or placed at the end of a sofa to hold lamps, drinks, or decorative items.

Kidney-shaped tables, historically known as table rognon, originated in 18th-century France and feature a concave front curve designed to fit comfortably alongside armchairs or seating.

These pieces traditionally combine fine hardwood frameworks like walnut and kingwood with decorative veneers, pierced brass galleries, and variegated marble or breccia tops.

Authentic pieces show hand-cut veneer work, natural age-related patination on metal galleries, cast metal sabots on the feet, and original stone inserts displaying unrefined undersides.

These compact side tables function well placed beside a modern sofa, flanking a bed as nightstands, or filling narrow wall spaces and entryways to add architectural interest.

Dust marble surfaces regularly with a soft cloth, wipe spills instantly to protect the stone from acidic staining, and maintain the surrounding woodwork using natural beeswax polish.
