Description

A smart and very well made antique William IV mahogany leather top desk / writing table. This was made in England, it dates from around the 1830-1840 period.

This is of wonderful quality, it sits on beautifully turned solid mahogany legs terminating in brass casters. The two drawers also have beautifully turned mahogany handles and fine, hand cut dovetailed joints. The inset leather top is hand coloured and tooled round the edges. This has a nicely finished back so can be used as a free standing item.

We have had this re-polished, the condition is excellent for its age. There is just some normal age related wear and patina here and there beneath the polish.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

The William IV style, spanning the 1830s, acts as a transitional phase between Regency and early Victorian design, characterised by robust proportions, classical motifs, and heavy turned legs.

Pieces from this era typically feature dense tropical hardwoods like solid mahogany, often complemented by hand-tooled leather writing inserts, brass castors, and secondary woods such as pine or oak for drawer linings.

Authenticity is indicated by traditional joinery methods such as hand-cut dovetails, timber shrinkage consistent with age, original brass hardware, and hand-tooled leather inserts rather than modern synthetic bonding.

Pairing a traditional wooden desk with minimalist modern seating or placing it against a neutral wall creates a balanced focal point that highlights the rich grain and historical craftsmanship.

Maintain the timber by applying high-quality beeswax periodically, protect the leather surface from direct sunlight and moisture, and avoid placing the furniture near heat sources to prevent cracking.
