The Aesthetic Movement emerged in the 1870s and 1880s, promoting the philosophy of art for arts sake by rejecting heavily ornamented Victorian styles in favour of simpler, refined lines and craftsmanship inspired by Japanese and other global art forms.

These pieces were typically constructed from solid walnut or walnut veneers applied to secondary timbers, utilising traditional joinery such as mortise and tenon joints, hand-turned spindles, and subtle edge detailing.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-appropriate tool marks, natural oxidisation of the timber, traditional hand-cut joinery, and specific design motifs characteristic of the 1880s rather than later reproductions.

An antique wooden table provides functional surface space and warmth, working effectively as a lamp table beside a modern sofa or as an accent piece in a minimalist room to add textural contrast.

Preserve the finish by dusting regularly with a soft, dry cloth and occasionally applying quality beeswax, avoiding silicone-based polishes, direct sunlight, and excessive moisture or humidity fluctuations.
