During the Victorian and Edwardian periods, walking sticks functioned as essential accessories for gentlemen and gentlewomen, indicating social status, fashion, and personal taste rather than solely serving as mobility aids.

Antique canes typically feature shafts made from hardwoods such as ebony, malacca, or snakewood, paired with handles crafted from sterling silver, horn, ivory, or porcelain.

Authentic pieces usually bear British hallmarking stamps on the silver mount, including a makers mark, a standard mark such as a lion passant for sterling silver, and a date letter corresponding to the assay office records.

An antique cane can be displayed upright within a heavy ceramic or metal umbrella stand in a hallway, or mounted horizontally upon a library wall using specialized display brackets.

Silver components should be cleaned sparingly with a non-abrasive microfiber cloth to preserve the patina, avoiding harsh liquid dips, whilst wooden shafts benefit from occasional applications of microcrystalline wax.
