Tilt-top tables, often referred to as snap-top tables, gained popularity in Britain during the 18th century. They were designed to be tilted into a vertical position and stored against a wall when not in use to save space in smaller period rooms.

These tables are traditionally constructed from dense hardwoods like mahogany or oak, featuring a birdcage or catch mechanism beneath the circular top. The central pillar typically descends into a tripod base supported by three curved legs.

Authenticity is determined by examining construction joints, timber grain, patination, and the mechanics of the tilt mechanism. Hand-cut dovetails, traditional pegs, and natural wear consistent with age indicate a genuine period piece rather than a later reproduction.

An antique tilt-top table provides functional versatility and historic character in contemporary settings. It can be displayed fully lowered as an accent table with a lamp, or tilted upright to showcase the timber grain as a decorative wall feature.

Preserve antique mahogany by maintaining stable room temperatures away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent timber warping or cracking. Clean surfaces with a soft, dry cloth and apply traditional beeswax periodically to maintain the finish.
