The Cotswold School originated in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, heavily influenced by the Arts and Crafts movement, emphasising traditional hand-working techniques, exposed joinery, and the natural qualities of British timbers such as oak.

Pieces from this tradition are constructed primarily from solid native hardwoods like English oak, utilizing visible pegged joints, hand-planed surfaces, and robust framing rather than modern fasteners or veneers.

Authenticity is verified through characteristics such as hand-tooled surface marks, traditional mortise and tenon joinery with exposed wooden pegs, solid timber construction without modern laminates, and an absence of mass-produced factory indicators.

This piece pairs well with minimalist contemporary seating or mid-century dining chairs to highlight the contrast between clean modern lines and traditional hand-crafted textures, creating an organic focal point in a dining room or living space.

Maintain the timber by keeping it away from direct sunlight and radiators to prevent splitting. Dust regularly with a dry cloth and occasionally apply natural beeswax to nourish the wood and preserve its historic finish.
