Description

A very rare early Minton porcelain figure of the Cobbler's Wife. The very first Minton figures, models 1-8, are small and only modelled to the front, the back being recessed and undecorated. Decorated in rich enamels and set on an oval base, the front with some gilt decoration. This model is number 5, showing a clearly furious woman trying to throttle her cobbler husband who is seated on a stool formed of shoe lasts, presumably not working as hard as he should be. A basket and a pair of black leather boots lie on the floor. Unmarked, c.1824-1825.

Reference: Minton Pottery & Porcelain Of The First Period, Godden, page 82 and a design sketch of the model from the original factory book is shown amongst others of these early figures in plate 132.

It measures 10.5cm (4 1/8") high, 7.6cm (3") wide and 1.3cm (3 1/2") deep.

In excellent condition with no damage, repair or restoration. There is a little gilt wear to the base and a fine glaze line to the reverse of the base, about 5mm from the top.

Date of Manufacture

The Fancy Fox has dated this Antique Porcelain Figure to the 19th Century.

The Georgian era encompasses porcelain production spanning from the mid-18th century through to the 1830s, characterised by hand-potted bodies, soft-paste transitioning to bone china, and intricate hand-painted polychrome enamel decoration.

Early 19th-century figures were typically cast or pressed in soft-paste porcelain or bone china bodies, finished with a transparent glaze, and hand-decorated using metallic oxide enamel paints fired at lower temperatures.

Authentic pieces exhibit signs of period manufacture such as unglazed foot rims, crazing in the glaze, kiln dust inclusions, hand-mixed enamel pigments, and often impressed or painted factory numerals beneath the base.

These pieces function effectively as cabinet displays or focal points on mantelpieces, where their intricate scale can be appreciated against neutral backgrounds and within enclosed glass cabinetry for protection.

Cleaning should be restricted to gentle dusting with a soft, dry brush. Water and chemical cleaning agents must be avoided, particularly on overglaze enamels which are susceptible to abrasion and fading.
