The blue willow pattern originated in late 18th-century England, heavily inspired by traditional Chinese hand-painted porcelain designs. It rapidly became a staple of British transferware production, popularised by various Staffordshire potteries.

These pieces were typically crafted from refined earthenware or ironstone, decorated using the copperplate transfer printing method. Cobalt blue metallic oxides were applied to tissue paper and transferred onto the ceramic body before glazing and firing.

Authenticity is assessed through examination of the ceramic body, glaze crazing, transfer blurriness, and any makers marks stamped on the reverse. Early pieces often exhibit characteristic stilt marks, imperfections in the glaze, and softer earthenware bodies.

These pieces can be displayed on plate racks, hung as wall art using specialised brackets, or incorporated into neutral tablescapes to introduce historic pattern and rich blue tones into a modern room.

Antique ceramics should be hand washed gently using mild soap and warm water, avoiding harsh abrasives or soaking that could penetrate historic glaze crazing. Display them away from direct sunlight and areas subject to sudden temperature fluctuations.
