FAQs

Wedgwood lustreware is a type of ceramic featuring an iridescent metallic glaze that creates a shimmering, mother-of-pearl effect. It was famously revived and expanded in the early 20th century, particularly through the visionary designs of Daisy Makeig-Jones during the 1910s and 1920s.

These pieces are crafted from fine earthenware or porcelain, painted with intricate enamel designs, and treated with metallic oxide glazes. The items undergo multiple firings in a kiln to achieve the distinct iridescent sheen and detailed gilding.

Authentic pieces typically feature official factory backstamps, pattern numbers, and distinct hand-painted or transfer-printed gilt detailing. The quality of the iridescent glaze and the specific depth of the lustre colours are also key indicators of period production.

These vibrant decorative objects work well as striking focal points on sideboards, open shelving, or glass-fronted cabinets. Pairing them with neutral backgrounds allows the rich colours and metallic gilding to stand out.

Antique lustreware should be cleaned strictly by hand using a soft, dry cloth or lukewarm water with mild soap if necessary. Avoid abrasive cleaners, scrubbing brushes, and dishwashers to protect the delicate metallic glazes and gilding.
