FAQs

A bureau plat is a type of kneehole writing desk that originated in France during the late seventeenth century and remained popular through the nineteenth century, characterised by its flat writing surface and finished back.

These tables are traditionally constructed from solid woods such as mahogany or oak, often featuring fine veneers, dovetailed drawer construction, and cast brass or gilt bronze mounts known as ormolu.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-appropriate joinery such as hand-cut dovetails, timber shrinkage consistent with age, hand-carved details, and traditional hardware without modern machine markings.

A traditional writing desk works well as a focal point in a home office or living space, paired with minimalist contemporary seating to create a balanced contrast between old and new.

Preserve wooden surfaces by dusting regularly with a soft, dry cloth and occasionally applying quality beeswax, avoiding direct sunlight, excessive heat, and moisture to protect the finish.
