Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 19TH CENTURY:
Cast mounts in Empire taste: late nineteenth-century French revival work.
Helmeted classical busts topping tapered legs: distinctive late Victorian neoclassical styling.
Gilded finish preserved in the recesses with polished high points: decades of dusting.
Scuffs and mellowed fading across the leather surface: honest working wear.
Soft rounding and surface marks along the timber edges: long everyday handling.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This nineteenth-century French Empire bureau-plat is a mahogany writing table finished in a dark brown tone with an inset leather top. Gilded bronze mounts adorn the structure, featuring ornate escutcheons on the frieze drawers, caryatid mounts at the corners, and claw feet sabots on the tapered legs. Both sides display matching decorative bronze details, complemented by moulded edging around the rectangular writing surface. Measuring 78.5 cm high, 145 cm wide, and 75 cm deep, this practical desk functions as a centrepiece within a gentleman's library or private study. It provides an organised surface for writing and administrative tasks, accommodating a chair beneath its frieze while maintaining a formal aesthetic suitable for a traditional study or home office.

FAQs

A French Empire bureau plat is a flat-topped writing table developed in the early nineteenth century, characterised by classical symmetry, dark mahogany construction, and neoclassical metal mounts such as caryatids and laurel wreaths.

Empire writing tables are typically constructed from solid mahogany or mahogany veneers, featuring inset leather writing surfaces on the top and gilded bronze or brass mounts along the frieze and legs.

Authentic nineteenth-century pieces feature hand-cut dovetail joints in the drawer construction, hand-chased metal mounts with natural oxidisation, and signs of hand-planed timber on internal surfaces.

Position the desk centrally in a home office or library, pairing its rich mahogany timber with neutral wall tones, modern minimal desk lighting, and understated upholstery to balance the ornate classical detailing.

Dust wood surfaces with a clean, dry microfibre cloth and apply clear beeswax polish sparingly. Keep the leather top conditioned with specialised wax, and clean metal mounts using a soft brush to prevent moisture accumulation.
