This 16th-century Spanish Baroque ecclesiastical textile is a semi-circular liturgical cope fashioned from crimson silk velvet, measuring 127 cm high and 246 cm wide. The straight top edge carries a wide embroidered border of couched metal thread and appliquéd silk, displaying curling acanthus leaves, heraldic shields featuring the gridiron of St. Lawrence, martyr's crowns, and palm leaves. A burgundy and yellow fringe trims the lower margin of this orphrey band, sitting above the plain burgundy velvet body of the vestment. An attached paper label bears typewritten notes detailing its origin in the Royal Chapel of El Escorial during the reign of Philip II. In a modern interior, this textile functions as a decorative wall hanging displayed flat, or positioned above a sideboard to showcase the historical embroidery and rich colour palette. The semi-circular layout adapts to wide wall surfaces in a hallway or study, bringing ecclesiastical heritage and intricate metallic threadwork into a residential setting.

A cope is a semi-circular liturgical mantle worn by Christian clergy during non-Eucharistic ceremonies, processions, and formal religious occasions.

Spanish copes were constructed using heavy silk velvet or damask, trimmed with woven metallic fringes and detailed with gold or silver wire embroidery laid onto structural canvas backing.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-stitched couching technique along metallic threads, variable natural tarnish or oxidisation on silver and gold wire, and hand-loomed backing fabrics.

Antique copes are commonly framed within custom acrylic display cases and wall-mounted as high-impact textile art above sideboards or in grand entrance halls.

Preserve these garments by storing them flat in climate-controlled environments away from UV light, avoiding folds across metallic embroidery to prevent wire breakage and creasing.
