Framed butterfly and insect collections gained immense popularity during the Victorian era, driven by a surge in natural history collecting, exploration, and the Victorian fascination with cataloguing the natural world within domestic cabinets of curiosity.

Authentic period entomology cases are typically constructed from dense hardwoods such as mahogany, oak, or walnut, featuring a glazed glass front, a pinned cork or paper backing board to secure specimens, and airtight seals to prevent pest infiltration.

Authenticity is indicated by aged hand-written species labels, historic pin types such as hand-pulled brass pins, slight paper yellowing, and traditional joinery methods on the wooden frame rather than modern mass-produced staples or synthetic backing materials.

These pieces work exceptionally well as focal points on gallery walls alongside modern abstract art, or placed within a study or library to add organic texture, intellectual depth, and a touch of cabinet-of-curiosities styling.

To prevent fading and damage, keep framed specimens away from direct sunlight, maintain stable indoor humidity levels to avoid mould or wood warping, and ensure the case remains tightly sealed to protect against museum beetles.
