Description

A fine quality "Gentleman's Life Preserver" which also could be a "Bosuns Persuader", as they are both similar....this came from a ladies' personal collection and is covered in brown threadwork with each end weighted in lead and covered with the intricate brown threadwork....what is nice about this early example, is that it has a brass disc shape plaque on each end, that has a picture of a horses head on it,...something I have not seen before...it is in nice "used" condition with a little wear on one end, where the lead can just be seen, but doesn't detract from the item...in fact it shows it has had a life..!

English C1770-90.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

A life preserver in this historical context refers to a small, heavy-duty bludgeon or club carried by gentlemen in the 18th and 19th centuries for personal protection against highwaymen and urban street crime.

These pieces typically comprised a weighted core of lead or iron, wrapped in tightly woven cord, thread, leather, or baleen, often finished with brass caps or finials for added durability.

Authentic items display period-correct wear, traditional cord-binding techniques, hand-forged or cast brass components, and natural material ageing consistent with late 18th-century craftsmanship.

Displaying historical curiosities on a bespoke mount within a study or library cabinet adds an element of historical intrigue and sophisticated academic charm to a room.

Maintain stable indoor humidity levels away from direct sunlight to protect organic thread and leather bindings, and gently dust metal elements with a dry, soft cloth without applying harsh chemical polishes.
