An early 1800s fruitwood spice muffineer which unscrews in the middle to refill.

It measures 14.5cm h.

Good condition with a nice colour and patina.

Treen refers to small, functional or decorative wooden household objects made by hand or on a lathe, with muffineers specifically used for dusting spices or sugar onto food.

These items were typically turned on a pole lathe from dense native hardwoods such as boxwood, fruitwood, or maple, often featuring hand-drilled piercing patterns for the shaker top.

Authentic pieces exhibit signs of age such as hand-turned tool marks, shrinkage cracks, natural wear patterns, and a deep, lustrous patination developed over centuries of handling.

They can be displayed in groups on open shelving, sideboards, or within glass cabinets to add textural warmth, organic shape, and historical character to a room.

Treen should be kept away from direct sunlight, extreme temperature fluctuations, and moisture, occasionally treated with microcrystalline wax to protect the dry wooden surface without harming the patina.
