Monastery tables originate from communal dining halls in European religious houses where monks gathered for meals, typically characterised by long, heavy timber boards designed to seat large numbers of people.

These tables were traditionally crafted from robust European hardwoods such as elm, oak, and walnut, chosen for their durability and dense grain structure capable of enduring heavy daily use.

Authenticity is identified through hand-cut joinery, natural patina accumulated over decades of use, hand-planed surface irregularities, and traditional fastening methods such as wooden pegs or hand-forged screws.

Pair the substantial wooden surface with contrasting minimalist contemporary dining chairs and a streamlined overhead lighting fixture to balance the heavy traditional proportions with modern lines.

Maintain the timber by dusting regularly with a dry cloth, avoiding direct sunlight and excessive heat fluctuations, and occasionally treating the surface with natural beeswax to nourish the wood.
