18th Century Oak and Elm Refectory Table C.1720

18th century
Description

A really beautiful George I period oak and elm refectory table with three original long planks to the top of an excellent warm colour and with a deep and natural patinaion with cleated ends and some old nicks, worm and bruises to the edges of the boards – the worm long since treated dead and not affecting strength or structure.

.

The top set on a wide apron uniting substantial oak legs with chamfered corners.

This table originally had a box stretcher but this has been adapted to create a central stretcher – many years ago and appears to be a 19th century alteration. It is very common to see the move to a central stretcher on these very old tables because box stretchers make it difficult to position chairs and to push them under when not in use.

.

The table is extremely heavy. The top lifts off for transport.

.

The table seats ten easily and is shown here with a set of eight Arts and Crafts oak and walnut chairs attributed to the Glasgow School, Wylie and Lockhead, and which are available separately.

.

This is a stunning large and early English refectory table.

.

.

Dimensions are:

.

9ft / 108 inches long, 28.75 inches wide and 29.5 inches high. From floor to lowest point of apron is 25 inches.

This George I period refectory table belongs to the Georgian country style and dates from the 18th century. Made from oak and elm, the piece has a dark brown timber colour with a deep, natural patination, a three-plank top with cleated ends, a wide apron, and substantial legs with chamfered corners united by a central stretcher with pegged joinery. Visible signs of age include old nicks, worm and bruises to the board edges, alongside an adapted central stretcher alteration dating from the nineteenth century. Measuring 274 cm long by 73 cm wide and 75 cm high, this heavy refectory table seats ten easily. It serves as a large dining table in a rustic farmhouse dining room, providing a central surface for family meals and gatherings where guests can sit comfortably around the stretcher base.

Originally designed for communal dining in medieval monastic dining halls, refectory tables are characterised by their long, narrow proportions, planked tops, and sturdy underframe construction.

Early 18th-century examples typically utilise pegged mortise and tenon joinery, thick oak or elm timber planks, and heavy stretchers connecting the upright legs to ensure long-term stability.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-planed top surfaces, wooden peg construction rather than modern metallic fasteners, natural shrinkage across timber boards, and oxidation in unpolished areas.

A historical refectory table functions as a focal point in a contemporary dining space when paired with modern upholstered seating, minimal ceiling lighting, and neutral woven textiles.

Regular application of a high-quality beeswax paste protects the timber surface, while placing the table away from direct heat sources prevents movement and cracking in the wood.
