This nineteenth-century antique refectory dining table is constructed from solid fruitwood with a rich warm brown timber colour and an attractive natural wood grain. The piece adopts a rustic farmhouse style, built with a rectangular plank top, a functional pull-out extension leaf at one end, sturdy square-section legs, and lower H-stretchers. Surface details include age-related scratches, small indentations, edge wear, and a naturally worn patina acquired over generations of use. The table measures 73.5 cm high by 207 cm wide and 85 cm deep. In a contemporary home, the table serves as a spacious dining surface in a kitchen or dining room, providing extra flexibility for seating guests when the end leaf is extended. The understated country character and warm fruitwood tones coordinate well with traditional or eclectic interior schemes.

A refectory table is a long, narrow wooden dining table historically used for communal dining in monasteries and grand halls. Characterised by a solid plank top, sturdy legs, and supporting stretchers, it remains a classic design for spacious dining areas.

Traditional refectory tables were typically crafted from durable hardwoods such as oak, walnut, or fruitwoods like cherry and apple. These dense woods provided structural stability for long planks and heavy daily use.

Authentic period pieces often feature hand-planed top surfaces, peg-tenon joinery, uneven wear patterns around the stretchers and feet, and a rich patina developed over decades of waxing and natural oxidation.

A large wooden refectory table can be paired with contemporary dining chairs, modern pendant lighting, and minimal tabletop decor to create a balanced contrast between historic craftsmanship and clean modern lines.

Dust regularly with a soft cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax paste periodically along the wood grain. Keep the table away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent timber movement or splitting.
