This late Georgian architect's desk from the 19th century is constructed from mahogany with a warm brown timber colour and a green leather writing surface featuring gold tooling to the border. The rectangular top has rounded corners and contains a central slope with a brass handle that rises to various angles using an adjustable ratchet mechanism. Below the top sit three lockable drawers with cock-beaded edging and later round metal handles. The piece stands on four turned and reeded legs with dark ebonised elements at the collars, terminating in original brass castors. The later leather top displays typical signs of use, and surface marks appear across the woodwork. The desk measures 80 cm high, 109.2 cm wide, and 71.1 cm deep, with a knee height of 65 cm. Placed in a study, home office, or gentleman's library, it provides a functional workspace for writing or drafting while serving as a traditional statement table for daily household use.

Originating in the eighteenth century, an architects or drafting desk is a specialised writing table featuring an adjustable sloped surface designed for drawing, reading, and technical planning.

Late Georgian desks were typically constructed from solid mahogany or mahogany veneers, featuring hand-tooled leather writing surfaces, brass castors, and internal wooden ratchet mechanisms for adjusting the top slope.

Authentic late Georgian examples display hand-dovetailed drawer joints, original brass hardware, reeded or turned leg details, and functional mechanical elements such as ratcheted risers or pull-out supports.

Position the desk near a natural light source in a home office or library, pairing it with neutral lighting and understated seating to highlight its craftsmanship and wood tones.

Dust mahogany surfaces regularly with a soft cloth and apply beeswax annually, while conditioning the leather surface with a specialised leather balm to prevent drying and cracking.
