Refectory tables originated in medieval monasteries where monks gathered for communal meals in the dining hall, known as a refectory. Over the centuries, the design evolved from heavy, fixed medieval boards into lighter regional iterations crafted by local cabinetmakers for country houses and community spaces across Europe.

Traditional French farmhouse and refectory tables were typically constructed using locally sourced hardwoods and softwoods. Tabletops were frequently made from wide planks of pine or fruitwood for a smooth working surface, while the structural frames and legs utilised durable timbers such as oak.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-cut joinery such as pegged mortise and tenon joints, natural patination from decades of use, and timber shrinkage consistent with age. Hand-planed surfaces, irregular plank widths, and traditional blacksmith-made fixings further indicate period craftsmanship.

A long wooden table serves as a strong focal point in open-plan spaces and can be balanced by pairing it with contrasting modern seating or industrial lighting. Keeping the expansive timber surface largely uncluttered with simple centrepieces allows the natural grain and historical character to stand out.

Preserve antique wood surfaces by avoiding direct sunlight and maintaining consistent indoor humidity to prevent timber splitting. Clean regularly with a dry or barely damp cloth and periodically apply natural beeswax to nourish the wood and maintain its protective finish.
