Victorian furniture design spans the reign of Queen Victoria (18371901), encompassing various revivals from Gothic to Rococo, typically characterised by heavy, solid construction, elaborate ornamentation, and dark, rich timbers.

Cabinet makers predominantly utilised dense tropical hardwoods such as rosewood and mahogany, often featuring intricate veneer work over secondary pine or oak carcases, frequently supported by heavy carved pedestals.

Authenticity is identified through hand-cut dovetails, traditional joinery methods, natural ageing signs like patination and shrinkage cracks in veneers, and the presence of period-appropriate fixings such as brass castors.

Pairing a richly grained wood table with minimalist, modern seating creates a striking juxtaposition that highlights the historical craftsmanship while maintaining a balanced, functional living space.

Preserve antique wood by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent veneer cracking, and clean only with a soft, dry cloth, applying quality beeswax sparingly to nourish the grain.
