Grand 4.5ft Antique Early Victorian Rosewood Tilt Top Round Centre Dining Table C1840
£2,985 $3,994 €3,495
Grand Early Victorian Rosewood Tilt top Table.
An exceptionally rare statement piece of the early 19th Century.
This remarkably rare English Rosewood tilt-top table, dating from the early Victorian period circa 1840, represents the pinnacle of grand architectural cabinetmaking. Measuring a commanding 1355mm in diameter, the piece was originally designed as a centre table, intended to stand as the principal focal point in the middle of a grand drawing room or library in a substantial country house or townhouse. While its significant scale and robust construction allow it to comfortably serve as a breakfast or intimate dining table for four to six people, its primary historical role was as a social hub for displaying fine objects or serving tea.
The table is centred around a massive, solid rosewood pillar featuring deep, precision-cut fluting. This central support is uniquely framed by dramatic carved buttress scroll supports that bridge the pillar to a heavy melon-form bulb, pr...oviding a silhouette that is both powerful and elegant. The craftsmanship is further elevated by the table''s most distinctive aesthetic feature—a very unusual curved and crossbanded veneered edge that encircles the expansive top. This design is notably rare, departing from the standard moulded edges typically found on tables of this era. The timber selection is of the highest order, showcasing the vibrant, high-contrast grain patterns and deep streaks characteristic of the finest period rosewood.
The base is equally impressive, consisting of three heavily carved legs featuring traditional Victorian foliate and C-scroll motifs which cleverly conceal the original brass castors. Mechanically, the table is as robust as it is beautiful. The top is secured by two original table screws and a very unusual wooden sprung latch, which operates with a notably satisfying ''thunk'' when closed and latched. Furthermore, the mechanism includes a stay designed to stop the large table top from falling when tilted in the upright position.
This piece has been sympathetically restored in our workshop, where the top has been meticulously re-skinned with shellac French polish. Using a traditional amalgamation technique, the natural depth of the grain has been revived while maintaining the authentic patina and character expected of a piece of this significant age and quality. We have carefully cleaned and waxed this table to protect its beautifully glazed French polished finish. The table has been thoroughly checked over in our workshop ensuring it is in home-ready condition , the table is solid and stable with no joint movement .
Please note; This item is in outstanding restored condition as shown by the photographs however being an antique item of this age there are blemishes and scuffs here and there which we feel adds to its originality and heritage.
