FAQs

Demi lune, or half moon, tables gained significant popularity during the Georgian period, particularly in the late 18th century during the neoclassical movement led by designers like Sheraton and Hepplewhite. They were frequently used as pier tables against walls or as expandable card tables in formal drawing rooms.

These pieces were typically constructed from fine hardwoods such as mahogany, often accented with satinwood stringing, marquetry, or veneer. Traditional construction features hand-cut dovetail joints, tapered spade legs, and occasionally hinged tops that unfold to reveal a baize-lined playing surface.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-correct joinery, such as hand-sawn secondary timbers (like oak or pine) inside the frame, hand-planed surfaces with natural oxidisation, and subtle irregularities consistent with hand tool manufacturing rather than modern machinery.

They make versatile statement pieces in entrance halls or living spaces, functioning well with a single decorative lamp, a mirror hung above, or placed together to form a full round centre table when space permits.

Maintain antique wood by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent veneer cracking and fading. Clean regularly with a soft, dry cloth and nourish periodically with traditional beeswax rather than modern silicone-based polishes.
