A George 111 Demi Lune Folding Tea or Console Table, Cherrywood and Elm C1790

18th century
For Sale by Gilt and Gesso
Description

A George 111 Demi Lune Folding Tea or Console Table, Cherrywood and Elm C1790.

A fine example George 111 demi lune fold over tea or card table with elegant square taper legs and solid elm fold over top.

The neoclassical style is typical of the late 18th century to circa 1800, we estimate to be c1790. A fine cabinet workshop, well constructed and very original with evidence of excellent detail.

A combination of timbers, a cherrywood base with satinwood or boxwood stringing beneath a solid elm top which opens to reveal a rich grain and chamfered finger-pull edge to allow ease of opening the top.

Presented in excellent, original condition. We shall put this through our workshop for an even wax before it is sent out but otherwise cosmetically and structurally exceptionally good.

A George III demi-lune folding tea or console table from around 1790, made from cherrywood and elm with a warm brown finish. The semi-circular piece displays a veneered apron with fine stringing, square tapered legs, and a solid elm fold-over top. The construction includes four legs, with two rear supports that swing out when the top unfolds. Measuring 71.5 cm high, 92 cm wide, and 43 cm deep, the table sits compactly against a wall. Placed beside the front door or in a hallway, this console table provides a functional surface for keys, post, or decorative items. The compact footprint makes it suitable for entrance halls, living rooms, or dining spaces where floor space is limited. The classic neoclassical silhouette integrates well into traditional interiors and English country house schemes.

A George III demi-lune folding table is a late 18th-century semi-circular table designed to sit flush against a wall, featuring a hinged top that folds open to double the surface area for tea serving or gaming.

Cabinetmakers during the late Georgian period typically crafted these tables using woods such as cherrywood, elm, or mahogany, incorporating mortise-and-tenon joinery, hand-cut dovetails, and a pivoting leg to support the opened top.

Authentic pieces display evidence of hand construction, including irregular drawer dovetails, hand-planed underside timber, original brass or iron hinges, and natural timber shrinkage across the grain.

Position the table in an entryway or hallway as a console, topped with a table lamp or mirror, or place it in a dining space to unfold when additional serving area is required.

Keep the wood away from direct heat sources and prolonged sunlight to prevent timber movement, wipe dust using a soft dry cloth, and apply a neutral beeswax polish periodically.
