This nineteenth-century military surgeon's amputation saw originates from the Victorian era and carries the maker stamp of Maw, London. The instrument consists of a grey steel blade paired with a polished gold-coloured cast brass handle, joined by two metal fixing screws. The design incorporates a heavy spine along the upper edge of the blade, a fine tooth edge running along the bottom, and a curved pistol-grip handle with distinctive scrollwork terminals at the ends. Surface ageing appears across the steel blade in the form of mottled oxidation and dark patination. The item measures 9 cm high, 31 cm wide, and 2 cm deep. In a modern interior, this piece serves as a striking decorative display item within a gentleman's library or study environment. Positioned upright on a bookshelf or flat surface among antique volumes, the medical instrument brings historical character and industrial design interest to the display. The compact scale allows it to fit neatly on narrow shelving units or within enclosed glass display cabinets alongside other scientific or medical curiosities.

Used by field surgeons during 19th-century military campaigns, these specialized saws were designed for rapid bone resection procedures prior to the advent of powered surgical equipment.

Early surgical saws were crafted with carbon steel blades for edge retention, reinforced with heavy steel spines and attached to cast brass or ergonomic wooden handles.

Authentic period examples feature maker marks stamped near the blade spine or handle, fine hand-cut teeth patterns, and period-appropriate brass fittings with original oxidisation.

These items are typically presented inside glass-fronted cabinets of curiosities, displayed on bespoke brass stands on a bookshelf, or mounted within dark shadow boxes.

Keep the object in a dry climate to prevent corrosion, clean steel elements with light mineral oil, and leave brass handle patination untreated to protect historical integrity.
