Magnifying glasses have been used for centuries, with handheld reading glasses becoming particularly ornate and popular during the Victorian era for reading small print, maps, and examining fine details.

Traditional reading glasses from this period typically featured turned wooden frames and handles made from mahogany, rosewood, or ebony, often fitted with brass mounts and high-clarity optical glass.

Authentic pieces generally display period-appropriate joinery, hand-turned timber with natural patina, slight imperfections or bubbles within the hand-cast glass lens, and period metal fixings such as brass pins.

An antique magnifier works well placed on top of a stack of coffee table books, displayed on a home office desk, or featured on a bookshelf as a functional decorative object.

Clean the glass lens gently with a microfiber cloth and lens cleaner, and maintain the wooden handle by occasionally applying a neutral beeswax polish to prevent the timber from drying out.
