Ironstone china was patented in Great Britain in the early 19th century as a durable, opaque type of pottery designed as an affordable and hard-wearing alternative to porcelain.

Ironstone is composed of a mixture of ball clay, china clay, feldspar, and slag of ironstone, fired at high temperatures to achieve a vitreous, stone-like body often decorated with hand-painted or transfer-printed motifs.

Authenticity is typically verified by examining makers marks, crazing of the glaze, weight, and consistency of the ceramic paste characteristic of nineteenth-century production methods.

Antique ceramic dishes can be displayed on plate racks, mounted on walls as focal art pieces, or used to bring historic character to open shelving in contemporary kitchens and dining areas.

Antique ironstone should be washed by hand using mild detergent and warm water, avoiding harsh abrasives and dishwashers to protect the historic glaze and prevent staining through existing crazing.
