Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

Boulle marquetry is a type of intarsia traditionally associated with Andre-Charles Boulle, cabinetmaker to Louis XIV. It involves cutting complex patterns from sheets of tortoiseshell and brass or copper simultaneously, creating contrasting positive and negative designs that became a hallmark of luxurious French furniture.

Authentic Boulle pieces typically feature an oak or pine carcase veneered with ebonised wood, tortoiseshell, and engraved brass or pewter. Construction often incorporates fire-gilded cast bronze or brass mounts, known as ormolu, which protect vulnerable corners and enhance the decorative scheme.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the precision of the marquetry hand-cutting, the oxidation and patina of the brass and tortoiseshell, the hand-cut joinery within the carcase, and the quality of the fire-gilded ormolu mounts rather than modern electroplated alternatives.

Pairing a highly decorative antique centre table with minimalist contemporary surroundings allows the intricate brasswork and tortoiseshell details to stand out as a focal point. It can serve as a striking standalone centrepiece in a modern living space or hallway.

Boulle furniture requires stable environmental conditions with controlled humidity and temperature to prevent the delicate tortoiseshell and wood from shrinking or cracking. Maintenance involves dusting with a soft, dry cloth and avoiding chemical polishes or direct sunlight.
