A knitting sheath is a traditional hand-held device used in northern England and Scotland to support one needle while working on hand-knitting, often carved from wood as an item of folk art.

They were predominantly crafted from local hardwoods such as boxwood, fruitwood, ash, or mahogany, frequently featuring inlaid contrasting woods or bone elements.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit hand-carved tool marks, genuine period wear, natural patination of the wood, and traditional regional design characteristics consistent with 18th and 19th-century craftsmanship.

Treen pieces can be showcased within glass display cabinets, on open bookshelves, or mounted on stands to highlight their sculptural forms and historical textures.

Preserve wooden treen by keeping it away from direct sunlight and extreme humidity fluctuations, applying microcrystalline wax sparingly to maintain the finish without damaging the patina.
