Description

Victorian Brownfield Stoneware Game Pie Dish with Bird Finial and Fern Relief Decoration, Dated 1875

A rare and impressive 19th-century Brownfield stoneware oval game dish, dated September 1875. This beautifully crafted piece is moulded in high relief with intricate depictions of game birds, feathers, and fern foliage, extending across the lid and sides. The surface is richly textured, and the elegant oval form is typical of game and pâté serving dishes popular during the Victorian period.

The lid is surmounted by a sculptural finial modelled as a partridge or pheasant resting among detailed vegetation, enhancing the three-dimensional quality of the design. The exterior retains the warm buff colour of biscuit-fired stoneware, giving a soft, matte texture, while the interior is fully glazed in a glossy pale yellow, making it practical for serving food as well as decorative use.

The base is impressed with the Brownfield mark alongside a date code corresponding to September 1875. Brownfield, based in Cobridge, Staffordshire, was renowned for producing fine stoneware and earthenware throughout the 19th century, noted for the precision and artistry of their moulded designs.

This highly decorative Victorian serving dish would originally have been used to present game pies, but today it makes a beautiful rustic centrepiece, storage vessel, or ornamental kitchen accent. The combination of skilled modelling, naturalistic subject matter, and historical craftsmanship makes it an exceptional addition for collectors of English ceramics, Aesthetic Movement pottery, or antique stoneware.

Victorian game pie dishes were popular culinary vessels used during the 19th century for baking and serving meat pies, often featuring elaborate relief-moulded animal motifs reflecting the Victorian obsession with natural history and grand dining.

These pieces were typically crafted from heavy stoneware or terracotta, often finished in a buff or cane-coloured glaze, and created using industrial moulding techniques developed by potteries in Staffordshire.

Authenticity is determined by examining the paste body, glaze crazing, makers marks or registration numbers on the base, and the crispness of the relief moulding which softens on later reproductions.

These items can be displayed on open shelving, sideboards, or within kitchen dressers to add historic texture and rustic charm to contemporary or traditional spaces.

Antique stoneware should be washed gently by hand using lukewarm water and mild soap, avoiding harsh abrasive brushes and dishwashers to protect the porous historic body and surface glaze.
