Description

Very unusual and super quality French Charles X (circa 1820) gueridon centre table in burr elm with a band of ebony string inlay and a wonderful central marquetry too.

This fabulous table can be tilted as a display piece, or left down as a centre table or lamp table, supported by the turned pedestal on triform legs, classic of the Charles X period.

Rich colour tone to the burr elm with its grain and the marquetry to the centre of the table top make this a very decorative piece of early 19th century French antique furniture.

Good condition and stands sturdy. Some minor age related marks, but all under decades after decades of beeswax polish.

The Charles X style bridges the late Neoclassical and early Biedermeier periods in France, characterised by clean architectural lines, light-coloured native timbers such as elm and ash, and a focus on figured grain veneers rather than heavy carving.

Gueridons typically feature a single central pedestal support branching into three curved legs, constructed using solid timber frameworks overlaid with decorative wood veneers like burr elm, mahogany, or walnut, often accented with delicate stringing or marquetry.

Authenticity is identified through construction details such as hand-cut dovetails, traditional joinery, natural beeswax finishes, timber shrinkage consistent with age, and the use of historic veneer cutting techniques that produce rich, irregular grain patterns.

A round pedestal table works effectively as a freestanding centrepiece in an entrance hall displaying a floral arrangement, or as an intimate dining table paired with contrasting modern or upholstered chairs to balance historical weight.

Preserve antique wood veneer by maintaining stable indoor humidity levels away from direct sunlight and heat sources, dusting regularly with a soft dry cloth, and occasionally applying microcrystalline wax to nourish the surface without building up residue.
