FAQs

Refectory tables originated in medieval monasteries, where they were used by monks for communal dining in the dining hall, known as a refectory.

Authentic refectory tables are typically constructed from solid hardwoods like English oak, utilizing mortise and tenon joints and sturdy stretcher bases for stability.

Authenticity is identified through hand-cut joints, adze marks on the timber, natural patina, shrinkage splits, and traditional peg construction rather than modern metal fixings.

This table can be grounded in a contemporary setting by pairing it with minimalist seating, modern industrial lighting, or contrasting textures to balance its historical weight.

Preservation involves maintaining stable indoor humidity levels, avoiding direct sunlight, cleaning with a damp cloth, and periodically applying beeswax to nourish the timber.
