Description

A superb set of antique mahogany and leather library steps in the Georgian style. They were made in England, and date from around the 1920’s period.

The quality is fantastic, they are very useful for reaching high shelves, and also make great side tables / decorative items. The mahogany frame is finely constructed, and the steps have inset tooled leather surfaces.

We have had these recently re-polished, the condition is excellent for their age. The mahogany has a wonderful patina with some minor marks and bumps remaining under the polish here and there, commensurate for age.

Library steps evolved during the Georgian period when private and institutional libraries expanded upwards with tall bookcases, necessitating functional yet elegant climbing aids for accessing higher shelves.

Authentic pieces are typically constructed from dense hardwoods like mahogany or oak, frequently featuring hand-tooled leather treads, turned spindles, and traditional joinery such as mortise and tenon.

Authentic pieces display period-appropriate patina, hand-cut dovetails or traditional fixings, genuine leather inserts with blind tooling, and timber shrinkage consistent with age.

They function effectively as vertical display stands for trailing plants and decorative objects in a study, or as sculptural accent pieces beside tall shelving units.

Maintain the timber and leather by avoiding direct sunlight, applying microcrystalline wax to the wood periodically, and cleaning the leather surface gently with a dry or barely damp cloth.
