Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 19TH CENTURY:
Five-digit stamped number on the drawer edge: standard Dublin workshop practice around 1830.
Concentric turned roundels and reeded sabre legs: late Regency and William IV design.
Pine drawer linings and unpolished underside timbers: standard early nineteenth-century cabinet making.
Partial Strahan & Co depository label: nineteenth-century Irish storage history.
Natural surface marks and mellowed polish on top: decades of domestic use.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A nineteenth-century Irish solid mahogany library table, attributed to Gillingtons of Dublin in the William IV style, presents in a dark brown timber with rich patination. The rectangular top with canted corners sits above a frieze fitted with two drawers, featuring wooden knob handles and brass escutcheons, set upon end supports with a turned central stretcher and scroll feet with casters. The piece measures 73.5 cm high, 143 cm wide, and 77.5 cm deep. Positioned in a study or library, the table functions as a writing desk or display surface for books and papers. The substantial surface area and integrated drawers provide practical workspace and storage within a traditional home interior.

FAQs

Nineteenth-century library tables are substantial writing desks typically crafted from hardwoods such as mahogany or rosewood, featuring frieze drawers, trestle or pedestal supports, and designed for central placement within a study or library.

These tables were predominantly constructed from solid mahogany or flame mahogany veneers, using hand-cut dovetail joints in the drawers, brass keyhole escutcheons, turned wooden knobs, and turned stretchers for structural rigidity.

Authentic pieces often feature dense, high-quality West Indian mahogany, maker stamps or paper labels from recognised Dublin cabinetmakers, distinctive carved motifs such as acanthus leaves, and period-correct dovetail drawer construction.

An antique library table functions effectively as a focal desk in a dedicated home office, a sofa table in a large living space, or a central statement piece within an entryway or reception room.

Regular dusting with a dry, soft cloth and occasional light applications of beeswax polish preserve the timber finish; keep the piece away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight to prevent drying or fading.
