Description

A charming antique Victorian mahogany writing table / desk. This was made in England, it dates from around the 1880’s period.

It is very well made and is a lovely petite size. It sits on turned solid mahogany legs and also has two beautifully turned mahogany handles. The single drawer has fine hand cut dovetailed joints, this has a gorgeous inset leather top that has been hand coloured and gold tooled.

We have had this recently re-polished, it is in excellent condition for its age. There are some small marks and indentations beneath the polish here and there, commensurate for age and adding to the lovely patina.

Victorian writing tables gained prominence during the 19th century as literacy rates rose and domestic administration expanded, leading to functional furniture designed specifically for correspondence and study.

These pieces were typically constructed from solid mahogany or mahogany veneers, frequently featuring inset writing surfaces made from tooled leather, accompanied by secondary hardwoods such as oak or pine in the internal framing.

Authenticity is determined by examining construction methods such as hand-cut dovetails in the drawers, the presence of traditional timber shrinkage, historical patina, and period-appropriate hardware.

Pairing the desk with contemporary seating or placing it against a minimalist wall creates a striking contrast that highlights its historical craftsmanship while maintaining functional utility in a modern workspace.

Preservation involves keeping the timber away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent cracking, dusting regularly with a soft dry cloth, and occasionally treating the wood with quality beeswax.
