The Georgian period spans the reigns of the first four British monarchs named George from 1714 to 1830, encompassing various stylistic shifts from heavy walnut and early mahogany to classical revivalism, characterised by architectural proportions and quality cabinet making.

These pieces were typically constructed from domestic timbers like oak, elm, or imported hardwoods like mahogany, utilising traditional joinery such as pegged mortise and tenon joints, dovetails, and hand-turned central pedestals supported by three cabriole or snake feet.

Authenticity is determined by examining timber shrinkage, hand-cut joinery marks, iron or wooden peg fixings, historic oxidisation patterns, and the wear consistent with age, distinguishing period items from later reproductions.

Positioning a period timber piece beside contemporary upholstered seating provides textural contrast, adding warmth, historical character, and functional surface space to living areas without overwhelming the room.

Maintain antique wooden surfaces by keeping them away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent timber splitting, applying microcrystalline wax periodically, and avoiding silicone-based polishes.
