A Superb Original 1930'S French Art Deco Ladies Advertising Mannequin

1920 - 1940
Description

A rare French Art Deco original 1930's advertising mannequin, possibly for a hat shop. It is large piece and very Art Deco! The lady has a short black crimp and her outfit or design is in green. She measures 2ft 6 inches (68cm) in height. There are some signs of wear which is understandable considering the age. I have photographed these faults, however as a whole the signs of wear do not detract from the piece being very decorative and rare.

(There will be a delivery charge as she has to be packed very carefully)

This French Art Deco ladies advertising mannequin bust dates from 1930 and follows the characteristic aesthetic of the period. Modelled in painted plaster and chalkware, the piece is finished in sage green with hand-painted facial features, a stylised bob haircut, and a geometric draped base set on a stepped pedestal. Visible details include a black band on the hat, brown tones on the shoulder wrap, and subtle signs of age consistent with a vintage advertising display piece. The bust measures 70 cm high, 26 cm wide, and 35 cm deep. Placed on a sideboard top or similar surface, this decorative sculpture serves as an eye-catching display accent in a living room, hallway, or bedroom. The sculpture provides a practical surface for hats and accessories while introducing period character to an interior space.

An Art Deco advertising mannequin bust is a commercial display figure created during the 1920s and 1930s for shop counters and store windows. They were specifically designed to model hats, scarves, and jewellery, embodying the distinctive geometric forms and stylised aesthetics of the period.

During the 1930s, display mannequins were predominantly crafted from painted plaster, chalkware, or papier-mache. Artists decorated them using hand-painted enamel or oil finishes, often adding glass eyes or moulded hairstyles to capture contemporary fashion trends.

Authentic pieces typically display hand-painted features, subtle age-related crazing or surface wear, and distinct period hairstyles such as bob cuts or finger waves. Look for structural characteristics such as angular drapery bases and occasional maker stamps or registration marks from French display manufacturers.

A mannequin bust functions as a decorative sculpture on sideboards, dressing tables, or deep shelving units. Interior designers frequently use them to display vintage hats, silk scarves, or statement jewellery to add a structural focal point within a room.

Preserve painted plaster by dusting gently with a soft, dry brush or microfibre cloth. Avoid using liquid cleansers or damp cloths, as moisture can compromise original paintwork and underlying plaster layers.
