Description

A beautiful quality piece of fossiliferous dark grey marble tops this circular Empire period guéridon table, which dates to circa 1840 and originates from France.

- Small white shell-shape inclusions in the marble.

- Marble top has a moulded edge.

- Lion paw feet to the tripod base, with brass castors beneath.

- Attractively shaped concave panel column support.

This is a relatively small and low circular table, at slightly less than a metre in diameter, making it a lovely lamp table or a display surface for decorative objects.

In good condition showing wear consistent with age and use. The marble top has a square shaped white outline mark, which is not obtrusive and blends in well with the colouring, but there are no chips or nibbles.

A gueridon is a small French table, often round and supported by a single central pillar or pedestal, which became particularly popular during the neoclassical and Empire periods of the late 18th and 19th centuries.

Empire period furniture typically utilised dense, dark timbers such as mahogany, walnut, and fruitwoods, frequently accented with inset marble tops, ormolu mounts, and finely carved classical details.

Authenticity is determined by examining construction techniques, joinery, timber ageing characteristics, the quality of the marble slab edge, and hand-carved decorative motifs consistent with early 19th-century cabinetmaking.

Such a table functions effectively as a centrepiece in a spacious hallway or as an occasional table in a living room, contrasting classical timber warmth with contemporary minimalist surroundings.

Wooden surfaces should be dusted regularly with a soft cloth and occasionally treated with natural beeswax, while marble tops require immediate wiping of spills and cleaning with pH-neutral solutions to prevent etching.
