Jacobean furniture, spanning the early to mid-17th century, is characterised by heavy, solid construction, predominantly in English oak, featuring rectilinear forms, turned legs, and restrained geometric or carved ornamentation.

These pieces were constructed almost exclusively from native English quarter-sawn oak, utilising traditional joinery methods such as mortise and tenon joints secured with wooden pegs, often without any metal nails or screws.

Authentic pieces exhibit natural timber shrinkage, hand-planed surfaces, irregular tool marks, dark oxidisation or patination accumulated over centuries, and pegged joints that show structural movement consistent with age.

An antique oak bench provides textural contrast in a modern setting when used as a functional seating option in an entrance hall, paired with a contemporary dining table, or utilised as a display surface for ceramics and textiles.

Preservation requires maintaining stable indoor humidity levels between 40 to 60 percent, keeping the wood away from direct heat sources and sunlight, and periodically applying microcrystalline wax to nourish and protect the surface patina.
