Description

A 19thC Bermantofts Faience Spoon Warmer, Grotesque Bullfrog 17cm makers mark.

A superbly stylish, original Bermantofts faience spoon warmer in the traditional form of a grotesque bullfrog.

The decorative table piece was originally a dining table stand to warm spoons, in this case probably desert spoons whilst now more commonly popular as decorative coffee table, desk, mantlepiece ornaments for bookcases etc.., excellent desk tidy for pens.

The turquoise seated bullfrog is characteristic of the Bermantofts model, which impressed makers stamp ‘b’ to the underside.

Whilst in mostly excellent condition and great surface to the glaze, the right hand front paw shows a small nibble, see photos.

Bermantofts faience refers to artistic pottery and architectural tiles produced in Yorkshire, England, during the late 19th century, particularly famous for its rich monochrome glazes and grotesque or aesthetic movement designs.

These pieces were typically cast or moulded in earthenware clay and finished with thick, vibrant colored alkaline or lead-based glazes, often featuring high-gloss finishes and intricate textured details.

Authentic pieces usually bear impressed manufacturer marks, pattern numbers, or artist ciphers on the unglazed base, alongside characteristic crazing within the glaze and period-appropriate manufacturing imperfections.

They make striking conversation pieces on bookshelves, sideboards, or mantelpieces, adding a touch of historical whimsy, texture, and rich colour to eclectic or maximalist design schemes.

Dust gently with a dry, soft microfibre cloth and avoid submerging in water or using harsh chemical cleaners, as this can damage the historic glaze and exacerbate age-related crazing.
