FAQs

Regency writing tables, dating from the early 19th century, are characterised by classical proportions, clean architectural lines, and a heavy reliance on rich timbers such as mahogany, often accented with brass details.

These tables were primarily built using solid mahogany or mahogany veneers over secondary softwoods, frequently featuring inset tooled leather writing surfaces and turned brass castors on the legs.

Authenticity is indicated by period joinery techniques such as hand-cut dovetails in the drawer construction, timber shrinkage consistent with age, hand-turned wooden knobs, and natural oxidisation of the wood.

An antique writing table serves as a functional workspace or a console in a modern room, contrasting sharply against minimalist walls or paired with contemporary seating to create a layered aesthetic.

Maintain antique mahogany by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent timber splitting, and nourish the surface periodically with traditional beeswax rather than modern silicone polishes.
