A costrel is a traditional portable vessel or flask used for holding liquids such as water, wine, or cider during travel or agricultural work, dating back to medieval times.

They were typically constructed from staved timber such as oak, elm, or maple, and secured with metal bands like brass or iron to maintain structural integrity.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit period-appropriate hand tools marks, natural patina from age and handling, period fixings, and construction methods consistent with nineteenth-century cooperage.

It can be displayed as a sculptural object on a bookshelf, mantelpiece, or sideboard to introduce rustic texture and historical character into a room.

Preserve treen by keeping it away from direct sunlight and sudden temperature fluctuations, occasionally treating the timber with microcrystalline wax to prevent drying.
