This German desk globe belongs to the mid-century modern period, dated 1950. The terrestrial sphere displays physical cartography printed in German on paper gores, featuring muted green and yellow tones with text labels such as Raths Physikalischer Erdglobus. The object rests upon a black ebonised turned wooden stand with decorative mouldings and a metallic finial accent at the top pole. Light surface wear, a small patch, discolouration, and fine cracking are visible across the printed surface. The dimensions are 46 cm high, 33 cm wide, and 33 cm deep. Place this globe on an office desk or a library table to complement a traditional gentleman's study interior. It functions as a decorative tabletop accessory while providing historical geographical detail through its German-language map. The piece sits securely on its turned wooden base, making it suitable for display on bookshelves or console units within a study or sitting room.

FAQs

A mid-century physical desk globe is a three-dimensional representation of Earth manufactured during the mid-20th century, specifically designed to display physical geography such as topography, ocean currents, and elevation rather than solely political boundaries.

During the 1950s, desk globes were typically constructed using printed paper gores pasted onto a plaster, cardboard, or papier-mache sphere, mounted on a turned wooden or metal base with a central vertical axis.

Authentic 1950s German globes often feature cartographic details in the German language, publisher cartouches specifying locations like Leipzig or Berlin, and contemporary political borders such as post-WWII country names.

A vintage desk globe works well placed on a wooden study desk, within a bookshelf, or on a side console alongside brass accents, leather-bound books, and warm ambient lighting.

Paper map globes should be kept out of direct sunlight and high humidity to prevent fading and warping, and cleaned gently using a dry, soft microfibre cloth without liquid cleaners.
