This is a 19th-century English antique fireside pole screen from the Aesthetic period, circa 1880, designed to function as an adjustable heat reflector. Constructed from ebonised mahogany and papier-mâché, the screen presents a lustrous black tonality with a dark appearance and a desirable aged patina. The rectangular papier-mâché screen is painted with a landscape featuring a country home and mounts onto a tall metal riser rod topped with a small ball finial, adjustable in height through 83 cm via a pincer clasp. The central support includes a turned wooden collar above a tripartite plinth base resting on round bun feet, adorned with foliate ormolu mounts. The piece measures 162 cm high, 37.5 cm wide, and 30 cm deep. It is suited for placement by a fireplace hearth in a living room or study to provide a decorative accent alongside a hearth.

A pole screen is a piece of fireside furniture popular in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, consisting of an adjustable shield mounted on a vertical rod. Designed to protect faces from the intense heat of open hearth fires, they often displayed decorative needlework or painted panels.

Traditional pole screens were crafted using woods such as mahogany, rosewood, or ebonised timber, mounted on turned pedestals with tripod bases. The decorative panels frequently featured needlepoint embroidery, lacquer work, painted landscapes, or papier-mache.

Authentic Victorian examples typically feature brass adjustment mechanisms or threaded wooden collars, turned central pillars, and stable triform or tripod bases. Look for original joinery, age-appropriate wear to the base, and period decorative techniques on the panel.

Place a pole screen near a fireplace, beside an armchair, or in a quiet reading corner as a sculptural decorative accent. Its slender vertical profile allows it to add visual height and historical interest to modern living spaces.

Dust the frame and panel regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth, avoiding chemical polishes or water on painted surfaces. Keep the piece away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent cracking of the paint and lacquer finish.
