A priest baton, also known as a fishing priest, is a small club traditionally used by anglers to dispatch fish humanely after catch. In historical contexts, items of this nature formed part of everyday utilitarian treen collections.

These items were typically hand-turned on a lathe using dense domestic hardwoods such as fruitwood, boxwood, or lignum vitae. The construction relies entirely on traditional carpentry and turning techniques without modern adhesives.

Authenticity is determined by examining the tool marks, hand-turned proportions, timber patination, and wear patterns consistent with age. Genuine examples exhibit natural oxidisation and handling marks accumulated over decades.

Such items can be displayed as sculptural objects on a bookshelf, within a cabinet of curiosities, or integrated into a desk vignette. Their organic forms complement rustic and academic interior schemes.

Preservation requires keeping the wood away from direct sunlight and extreme temperature fluctuations to prevent cracking. Applying microcrystalline wax occasionally helps maintain the surface finish and protects the timber.
