Delftware originated in the Netherlands during the 16th century as European potteries attempted to replicate imported Chinese blue-and-white porcelain. By the 17th and 18th centuries, production expanded significantly in towns like Delft and various English centres such as London, Bristol, and Liverpool, creating large decorative chargers intended for display on walls and sideboards.

Antique delft pieces are constructed from a buff or pinkish earthenware clay body. The body is coated with an opaque white tin-glaze, which provides a smooth canvas for hand-painted cobalt blue pigments before undergoing a high-temperature kiln firing.

Authenticity is identified by examining the glaze characteristics, such as fine crazing, glaze pooling, and fritting along the unglazed or chipped rim edges where the soft earthenware is exposed. Hand-painted brushwork will show subtle irregularities, and the reverse side often features traces of kiln-stilt marks or historical stilt scars.

An antique delft charger can be mounted securely on a wall as a focal point or displayed on a specialist stand within a traditional or transitional living space, pairing effectively with neutral walls and dark timber furniture to highlight the striking blue and white contrast.

Tin-glazed earthenware is porous and subject to chipping or glaze flaking, so it should be handled minimally with clean hands and kept away from damp environments. Cleaning should be restricted to gentle dusting with a soft dry cloth; water or liquid cleaners must be avoided to prevent moisture penetration through existing glaze cracks.
