Hourglasses have been used for centuries to measure time, transitioning from essential navigational and domestic instruments into decorative symbols of passing time and philosophical contemplation during the Georgian and Victorian eras.

Traditional antique sandtimers typically feature turned wooden frames made from oak, walnut, or mahogany, hand-blown glass bulbs joined with string or wax, and fine sand.

Authentic pieces often show signs of age such as hand-turned wood with tool marks, slightly irregular hand-blown glass bulbs containing natural sand, and appropriate patina on the timber.

An antique hourglass works well as a focal point on a bookshelf, a desk, or a mantelpiece, adding textural warmth and historical interest to contemporary or traditional spaces.

To preserve an antique sandtimer, keep it away from direct sunlight and excessive humidity to protect the wood and glass, and handle the fragile glass bulbs with care.
